February 2017 - Latest News on the website covering the history of the Mutch family name in North East Scotland.

SHARING & GROWING

I recently read an article about how Darwin’s theory on evolution had been hijacked by the “survival of the fittest” lobby. In reality he said, what drives progress is communities sharing and working together for the common good.

That is exactly what I experience so often with this website. Family history researchers who are happy to share their hard earned knowledge so that others can benefit and the quality of our knowledge improves, little by little.

Updates and new Family Lines

I have been very impressed with those of you who have taken the trouble to either send new information they have found or contacted me to highlight errors on the information published on the website. Thank you one and all.

Some of the main updates have included:

  • Michele Lang contacted me to point out an error with the entry for son William of family line W24 William + Isabella Smith. It seems like this couple christened two children named William as the first one died in infancy.

  • Janette Andrews took contact to point out a very bad typo I had made on the entry for her grandmother Jessie McCormack daughter of Elspet + James McCormack. She was a daughter of family line R11 Robert + Jessie Wallace. Janette also provided details of the rest of Elspet’s family.

  • Nancy Loe and I had a protracted email chat trying to make sense of a confusing 1851 census entry related to family line T1 Thomas + Elizabeth Will. In the end we decided that, no other evidence could be found for the newborn George mentioned, but instead all records pointed towards the 1 month old baby in the house actually being her g-g-grandmother Mary! George has been removed from this family line.

  • As part of the search for George above I found a very sad entry in the 1861 census. A 12 year old George Mutch is listed as a prisoner in Old Machar prison! Does anyone know which family line he might have belonged to?

  • Sheila Mason send me details of family line J45 daughter Helen + Peter Scatterty’s family and her connection. She is a descendant of James + Agnes Smith.

  • Kenny Bruce has provided the input to update son William’s family in family line J50 James + Elspet Morrison, especially William’s son James + Helen Mitchell Bruce’s children.

  • Annette Collins has sent details of her connection to Alexander Chivas son of family line J55 James + Margaret Mitchell.

  • I found the family for Mary + John Cameron on IGI. Mary is daughter of family line J2 James + Agnes Rennie.

  • I have found two new daughters for family line T5 Thomas + Mitchell Smith in the 1861 census.

  • I also found daughter Bathia of family line J46 James + Catharine Anne Copland in the 1871 census and was able to add some dates to her family.

Last time I told you I would be giving you details of James Shepherd Mutch son of John + Margaret Wells or Walls, family line J77, and his connection with the Arctic region of Canada.

Since then I have discovered that Joshie Mitsima, who had provided me with links to this information is no longer with us. He had written

My father was Teemotee Mitsima, born on Kekerten Island as the grandson of James Shepherd Mutch.

I would like to make contact with Joshie’s family before publishing his information on the Mutches website. If any of you have contact with his family, could you please pass on my email address and ask them to contact me?

Database status - We currently have details of 1574 Mutches and 559 spouses.
